Looks like the dreams of good weather and an early golf start can be laid to rest. The latest start ever for the City of London Courses occurred in 1978 when a ridiculous amount of snow fell in two storms, one on December 7th, 1977 and another on January 23-24, 1978. On April 19th of that year the City courses opened but there was still plenty of snow around in sand traps and in drifts caused by the mammoth storms. Here we are approaching the 19th of April and although the courses have been open as much as possible, it just doesn’t seem like the golf season is underway yet. This year is a lot different than 1978. 2018 “Spring” has had a unique combination of cold, rain, snow flurries, freezing rain, wind and floods and they have all conspired to make life miserable for not only golfers but anyone who enjoys being outdoors. Book your tee times early for this coming weekend at your favorite club because plenty of folks are going to want to be out there playing.
